While its true personality can take considerable time to shine, Marsanne’s ?ashy youth can be just as infectious. I love the ever-evolving bouquet; citrus, quince, apricot blossom, chervil, white rose and macadamia amplify in the glass. Time reveals richer derivatives of lemon meringue, honeycomb, sandalwood-honey and white true. The palate is balanced and long with a lusciousness that is tamed by a glacial, slatey minerality.

2018 Grosset New Release Rieslings

Geoffrey Grosset

The annual tasting and release lunch with Jeffrey Grosset is always a highly anticipated event.

This year’s masterclass was a focus on Riesling clones – something that perhaps not many of us have given much thought to previously but after 38 years of working his four estate-owned vineyards Jeffrey has a fascinating story to tell.  It is a story of variety & place: Rieslings ability to express its personality through clonal selection; the impact of soft and hard rock sites, organic farming and a gentle and uncomplicated process in the winery all form a unique DNA for each wine.

A tasting of all three clones: GM198 - the most commonly planted in Australia, GM110 - a scarce tightly packed bunch of German origin and 156 Australian, provided an insight to the singular expression and then as the sum of all parts: Polish Hill Riesling. – Perfume of fragrant talc, white floral notes and lime citrus vibrancy.  The line and drive of this wine is all about that mouth-watering acidity,  steely minerality, tension and nerve.  A wine of great purity and length!
