The colour is pale gold with a green tinge giving the impression that the wine is younger than itis. The bouquet shows hints of lemon flower together with some waxy, honeyed development so typical of great, aged Semillon. The grapes have been picked early to retain more natural acidity and the palate is dry with a zesty finish. Margaret is our best Semillon of vintage and can be aged for a further 5-10 years if so desired, during which time it will become more golden in colour and richer and more complex in flavour.

2018 Grosset New Release Rieslings

Geoffrey Grosset

The annual tasting and release lunch with Jeffrey Grosset is always a highly anticipated event.

This year’s masterclass was a focus on Riesling clones – something that perhaps not many of us have given much thought to previously but after 38 years of working his four estate-owned vineyards Jeffrey has a fascinating story to tell.  It is a story of variety & place: Rieslings ability to express its personality through clonal selection; the impact of soft and hard rock sites, organic farming and a gentle and uncomplicated process in the winery all form a unique DNA for each wine.

A tasting of all three clones: GM198 - the most commonly planted in Australia, GM110 - a scarce tightly packed bunch of German origin and 156 Australian, provided an insight to the singular expression and then as the sum of all parts: Polish Hill Riesling. – Perfume of fragrant talc, white floral notes and lime citrus vibrancy.  The line and drive of this wine is all about that mouth-watering acidity,  steely minerality, tension and nerve.  A wine of great purity and length!
